Balkan Beat Box Played at Masonic Temple
Thursday night saw a Israel-gypsy-funky party at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple. Openers Chin Chin got the energy up with their horn section and dancers on stilts that jiggled their way through the audience.
The Temple is a great place to see a show. Similar to the Warsaw, it is a beautiful old building with ornate chandeliers and ceiling work with a large open room with a stage. The Temple even has a balcony with ancient wooden fold-down seats.
Balkan Beat Box began their set with fanfare: A group of horn players and drummers began on the balcony and played their way down the stairs, through the parted crowd, and up to the stage to join Tamir Muskat and Ori Kaplan as the crowd seethed with excitement.
Speaking of the crowd, many used the show as an opportunity to wear their weirdest ensembles, including velour jackets, glittery tops, and a cockroach costume. Yes, a cockroach costume. Everyone was dancing, including the stilt-people who were still around, to the funkalicious beats of the band who put their horn section to excellent use.
Playing songs from across their repertoire, the band was in excellent form and kept the party going for hours. Definitely check them out, and be sure to make your way to one of the future shows at the Masonic Temple.
