Big Apple Music Scene defends Radiohead against Lily Allen logic.

Lily Allen is against Radiohead and they’re latest approach to selling records. She’s very against it.
Here’s a quote from Lily Allen on Radiohead (after calling them arrogant),
“They’ve got millions of pounds. It sends a weird message to younger bands who haven’t done as well,” Allen reasoned. “You don’t choose how to pay for eggs. Why should it be different for music?”
Two arguments from me.
First….
Yes, I agree with Lily Allen to a degree that Radiohead has the luxury to take this approach, because they are financially set from their past success and that new artists can’t pull this kind of thing off….but…
The music industry is changing and changing fast. This is a new approach to selling records, but it’s not the only approach. Lily Allen was an innovator of sorts with regards to gaining mainstream popularity via an online avenue…Myspace. So Lily Allen and other up and comers have to carve their own unique way to travel the road to discovery and after that to sell records. Use Radiohead as an example and find your own way that makes sense, both morally and financially.

Why morally? As I mentioned above, what is disturbing to me is that artists bash the Radiohead concept on a ‘pay what you want’ online release, but have qualms about selling their record through a big box store making it more and more difficult for small record shops to compete.
Second…
In a way you do choose how to pay for eggs, but more importantly, as an egg farmer, you choose where you want to sell your eggs…massive supermarket or local market. That is a moral and financial decision.
What would I love to see? A band that releases their new release only through independent record shops. No big box stores. Negotiate a fair deal with the shops. They will be willing because it will no doubt increase their sales, and (hopefully) generate additional sales.
I am all for Radiohead and I am all for Radiohead trying new things that shake up the music industry.
Note to Lily Allen: Radiohead is not going away. Radiohead (whether you want to accept it or not) is good for the music industry. They demonstrate that there are alternative ways to get attention, sell records and generate revenue. Respect them as an example and find you own way to do it.
Second note to Lily Allen: I really do dig your music.

Radiohead has always been revolutionary in their political tilt and their music, so why not their business model? I think they will be Lucky, see spoof at http://www.realcrash.com/lucky-couldnt-find-the-deed-radiohead/

Howard,
Interesting article at Real Crash…yet another a beautiful demonstration of our friendly lending environment.
As far as Radiohead goes, people are calling them out saying they’re crazy. If people don’t think that this was extremely well thought out and the numbers of all possible financial breakdowns were crunched, they’re sadly mistaken. This was a calculated move by a very smart band.

I think Radiohead is hands down the best band right now in the world. They have went from On a Friday to selling out venues of literally tens of thousands in a meer 15 years. They are always improving on their music, finding new avenues to create and their CDs just get better and better. How many people have heard of Lily Allen? pfft not as many as Radiohead. Fly by night musicians can cry all they want, the music industry is stale, with bargain basement music sold at Macy’s prices. I find most music today boring that is not on the cutting edge of technology, soul, and more about the music then making money. Chicks like Lily Allen are more about how it’s going to affect her purse then her music for making that comment. She can’t afford to do what Radiohead done? Why? Because she’s in it for the money, if she wasn’t she could do just what Radiohead done. I think it’s brilliant how many rich kids/adults are their in the world who has nothing better to do then punch in 99.00 for a name your price CD if the kid/adult are a fan.

who is she to call radiohead arrogant? If they can sell their new album online and say goodbye to EMI is because they have worked very hard for many years. They are a respected band around the world because they always innovate and propose with their music, why not innovating about the way of selling their music?
Radiohead took a great decision.
Shut up Lily, giving weak arguments just make you sound very very stupid.
