First River to River Show Was Yesterday

It was a beautiful day outside yesterday, perfect for the inaugural River to River concert at Castle Clinton in Battery Park. Mirah and Spectratone International started things off quite nicely. Mirah is an accomplished singer songwriter and her newer stuff almost has her sounding like a female Beirut. She relished in the bouncy, Eastern European-esque tunes of the band and her lilting voice was a perfect complement.

The next set was Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet, featuring Bela Fleck. They immediately got the crowd in a good mood with their twangy bluegrass. Washburn’s voice is strong and unwavering and Fleck on banjo with Casey Driesson on fiddle and Ben Sollee on the cello played their hearts out. Highlights were when each band member played a solo number. Driesson on the fiddle was absolutely mesmerizing and his vocals were great too. Sollee was beautiful and Fleck’s banjo instrumental was definitely a high point of the night. Hopefully this is an indication of the rest of River to River’s season!
