Magnetic Fields Played Town Hall

The Magnetic Fields just wrapped up four shows at Town Hall last night. I was lucky enough to attend the Friday show and it was wonderful. Surprisingly, the group played an acoustic set, which was in direct contrast to their feedback-heavy rock-infused latest album, Distortion. It was actually really nice to hear those songs dressed down, with all of Stephen Merritt’s genius lyrics decipherable now, and of course sublime. And of course, Merritt and Claudia Gonson were in top form with their jokey banter. The two-set show was mostly Distortion songs, but there was a healthy dose of older stuff from I, 69 Love Songs, and even some tunes by one of Merritt’s many side projects, the Gothic Archies, including “The Tiny Goat” and “Walking My Gargoyle.” While I wish there would have been more Holiday songs played, at least they played “Take Ecstasy With Me.” Lets hope we don’t have to wait another four years for a tour…
