MTV News Highlights Brooklyn Music Scene
MTV News is trying to reach out to the little people it seems, by doing an article on the “new” Brooklyn DIY music scene. As usual MTV are a bit late in reporting on bands like Yeasayer, A Place to Bury Strangers, and Dirty Projectors, but I guess they get points for trying? Maybe? Also featured in the article is promoter Todd P, who often stages live shows with these and other bands at places like Bushwick’s Silent Barn. Of course, by featuring these “DIY” and indie bands, MTV has almost ensured the demise of their indie-cred. My favorite quote is this one from Dave Longstreth of the Dirty Projectors:
“Todd came to New York and brought this aesthetic [that] came from the original DIY American-underground vibe of, ‘F— this, we can do it ourselves.’ We’re not represented by MTV and all those things. We’re gonna start our own network of people doing their own sh– and expressing themselves. We don’t need money; we don’t need magazines; we just need our imagination. And a vibe as free as that … It’s hard to bring into New York and have it still make sense because things are so competitive, but Todd is an amazing figure because he figured out how to do that.”
At least he got a nice “screw you MTV” in there. But does it really count if you are willingly participating in an MTV interview? Check out the whole article, along with a video, here.
