Pitchfork: Saturday Part II
As the day wore on, the music only got better.
I had been meaning to check out the Ruby Suns for a while now and seeing them live was the way to go. Cheerful, bouncy tunes that could make anyone sway to the beat. Side note, the small stage this year was much improved, with more space and better sound. Still not perfect, but a definite improvement over the last few years. Memories of a horribly crowded and way to soft Girl Talk set in 2007 were nearly forgotten.
!!! always put on a great show, but I couldn’t help feeling that this venue was a little too…nebulous for them. They do better in a tightly packed club, but their set was still lots of fun.
Bradford Cox of Deerhunter’s other band is called Atlas Sound. They have some good beats, but as my friend said, then it just doesn’t go anywhere. The music was good…but slightly boring. Last year’s Pitchfork performance by Deerhunter was more enjoyable.
Jarvis Cocker, lead singer of ’80s Brit band Pulp, knows how to perform, that is for sure. His stage presence is ridiculously, insanely, amazing and you just can’t take your eyes off of him. A true classic. He ended with the excellent “Cunts Are Still Running the World” and then came back out to play an encore (one of the few at the festival) of a “classic Chicago house song” from 1986.
Animal Collective were the headliners of Day One. I was pretty weary of their live performance even though I love their albums. I had seen them at the South Street Seaport last year and they were kind of awful. At Pitchfork they definitely improved their live show, although it is still a bit meandering for a concert. It was a great ending to a great day though.
