Pitchfork: Sunday, Part I
After getting some rest, the day finally started with some sun. Yeah!
The small stage was somehow already running behind, but that worked out well for me because this way I got to see Dirty Projectors and High Places, two more bands I had been meaning to check out for a while. Both are brooklyn bands that have gotten a lot of buzz, and I can now safely say that both deserve it. Dirty Projectors is totally not what I was expecting (I thought it would be nosier), but I was very impressed. The two women (Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian) had amazing voices and they did a great job of harmonizing with Dave Longstreth. They’re playing South Street Seaport for free on August 15–check ‘em out!
High Places were a bit of a different, more electronic feel, but they were also excellent. Go Brooklyn!
Next came a tough decision: Les Savy Fav or King Khan and His Shrines. Because I’ve seen Les Savy Fav before and had heard great things about King Khan’s live show, I headed over to the small stage to catch King Khan and His Shrines. And boy, was it worth it. That band sure knows how to party. And perform. They’ll be at Mercury Lounge on August 2 and at McCarren Park Pool with Deerhunter and Black Lips on August 3 and King Khan and BBQ Show will be at Santo’s Party House August 4. Make sure to catch them at one of those!
Next was a band I had really been looking forward to seeing: the Dodos. Their debut album Visiter is one of my favorites of 2008 so far and they did not disappoint.
Check the last post for the rest of the day’s reviews and pictures!
