Plug Awards Were Last Night
Last night I headed out west to Terminal 5 to check out the Plug Awards for independent music and media. Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible won album of the year, Radiohead won artist of the year, French DJ duo Justice won best new artist as well as best electronic/dance album of the year, which they accepted via video, while St. Vincent was there to accept her award for best female artist of the year. Now, on to the performances. Host Patton Oswalt was midly entertaining, but didn’t seem to be putting in too much effort. First performers White Denim were nothing special, but St. Vincent quickly made up for that with a beautiful yet intense couple songs. “Emerging artists”the Forms seemed pretty mediocre to me, but luckily Dizzee Rascal came on the fix that and try to inject some life into the crowd with some new songs off their forthcoming Maths and English. Then, one of my personal favorites, Jose Gonzalez came and played a few of his quiet numbers, which unfortunately may not have been so appropriate in the noisy setting. But I enjoyed him as always. The nicest part was that they moved through the awards at a nice clip and there wasn’t too much time to be bored.

Finally, the moment most of the crowd has been waiting for arrived: Impact Award Winner Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds came on to play a fullish set of about ten songs. Beginning with a few songs off their upcoming album Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, they started off great and only got better as they moved into older material, ending with the excellent “Stagger Lee.” Their raw energy and swagger was awesome and they truly are legendary.
