Sharon Jones, Soul Sister Extraordinaire
Friday night the Beacon Theater was a funkalicious place. The Budos Band, with its fifteen-or-so members started off the night right with their soulful grooves. Then, the Dap Kings took the stage and introduced Sharon Jones, who was dressed for the occasion in a sparkly, flirty dress. Her amazing voice ruled the stage, even with the awesome Dap Kings, back-up singers the Dancettes, and members of the Bushwick Philharmonic joining her onstage. She also invited up various audience members onstage at different times to dance with her–often young men, which was pretty entertaining, although one guy looked so awkward I felt bad for him–and Sharon.
The band played hits like “100 Days, 100 Nights,” “Let Them Knock,” and “Nobody’s Baby” from their latest album 100 Days, 100 Nights, as well as songs from their previous two albums and some covers like, Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately?” and James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s World.” They ended the night with a danceathon drawing from Jones’ West African and Native American roots that was quite a sight to see. Although the Beacon Theater doesn’t usually translate to crazy dancing, it certainly did on Friday night.
