The Village Voice’s Siren Festival is happening at Coney Island this year on July 18, and is free, as usual. Previously announced were BUILT TO SPILL, THE RAVEONETTES, FRIGHTENED RABBIT, THE GRAND DUCHY (Frank Black and his wife, Violet Clark), MONOTONIX, and MICACHU & THE SHAPES. Just added are: SPANK ROCK, FUTURE OF THE LEFT, JAPANDROIDS and BEAR HANDS. Sweet!

Everyone thought last year was the last, but the Village Voice has announced that the Siren Festival will return to Coney Island this summer! The free festival, although plagued by crowds and crappy sound, is still a favorite New York tradition of many. Who can turn down free music at Coney Island?? Anyway, this year’s festival will take place JULY 18, 2009 and the lineup so far is as follows:

Not bad, not bad at all.

Three giants of the nineties played two nights at Terminal 5 on Thursday and Friday: Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., and Built to Spill. I was at the show on Friday and much to my disappointment I missed the Meat Puppets who went on at 7:30 p.m. I did see all of Dinosaur Jr.’s set, who were excellent. But the real thrill for me was seeing Built to Spill perform their seminal album Perfect From Now On. They played the album all the way through with excellent jams and Doug Martsch wailing perfectly. After they finished they played a few more favorites, like “The Plan” and “Carry the Zero.” The best part of the night was when J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and members of the Meat Puppets came out on stage to play with Built to Spill for almost 30 minutes. They all seemed to be enjoying themeselves immensely, especially the Meat Puppet boys who were joking around a lot. Not sure what happened to Lou Barlow…I guess he had to head out early.
